Tenor Jonas Kaufmann performs at a Phoenix Opera Concert
 
 
It was Oscar night but in Phoenix it was Kaufmann night. A packed house showed they couldn't get enough of tenor Jonas Kaufmann's amazing voice. Four standing ovations and encores did little to satisfy opera fans who wished the night would never end.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer proclaimed February 24 as Jonas Kaufmann Day as did the Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton and the city council in a separate proclamations. The awards were given to him during the performance.

The German born operatic superstar performed with the Phoenix orchestra to a packed audience at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix.

Jonas Kaufmann is generally regarded as one of the greatest opera singers in the world. He has performed at the greatest opera houses in the world.

Kaufmann is known for his performances as Cavaradossi in Tosca, Don Jose in Carmen, and the title role in Don Carlos.

Since appearing on the scene in 1994, he has performed at major concert hall in Europe. His recording career began on the Decca label in 2008 after he was already regarded as an international superstar.

In 2011 he returned to the Metropolitan Opera in Wagner’s Die Walkure. He returned to the Metropolitan as Parsifal.

He recently performed at the Metropolitan and before coming to Phoenix
