Jonas Kaufmann: You Mean the World to Me – review |
|
Wonderful
tunes here, a generous dollop of schmaltz, and crooning from the
world’s top Wagner tenor
Or, as the song is known in
German, “Du bist die Welt für Mich”, the Richard Tauber
favourite.
Jonas Kaufmann’s album of popular music from
Germany c. 1925-35 ranges from operettas like Lehár’s Das Land
des Lächelns (”The Land of Smiles”) to songs from films, and a
duet, with soprano Julia Kleiter, from Korngold’s opera Die tote
Stadt. Some tracks have been specially recorded in English or
French for local markets.
There are wonderful tunes here,
a generous dollop of schmaltz, and far too much crooning into
the microphone from the world’s top Wagner tenor.
