Our music is for everyone, say stars at
new International Opera Awards ceremony
While opera may not be everyone’s cup of tea,
the audience at the International Opera Awards in London was treated to an
impressive showcase of high culture.
German tenor Jonas Kaufmann was
the big winner at the awards, scooping two prizes – for best male singer and
also the Reader’s award, expressing his gratitude along the way.
Tenor Jonas Kaufmann:
“That was really fantastic, I
mean I got my prize already and I was very happy and satisfied and relieved
and everything and then by surprise I got another one. I'm not only honored,
I mean this is too much. It's probably more than I can carry, I will have to
pay overweight for my flight home. But it's definitely worth it, don't
worry.”
Other winners on the night included Swedish soprano Nina
Stemme, who picked up the Female Singer Award and Britain’s Sir George
Christie, who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award.
